Bael tree is known as Adhararutha in Sanskrit, Iyalbudi in Tamil, Sriphalamu in Telugu, Billi in Gujarati, Bengal quince or stone apple in English, and Bel in Hindi and Bengali. Its scientific name is Aegle marmelos.
The Bael tree is considered sacred and its leaves are offered in prayers. It has a long history of medicinal use in India, Ceylon, and Burma.
Bael fruit has been used in Ayurveda for centuries. It has been employed to treat various conditions such as boils, dysentery (both amoebic and bacillary), earaches, ear discharge, fever, and cold.
Bael is rich in nutrients, including proteins (1.8%), fats (0.3%), minerals (1.7%), fiber (2.9%), carbohydrates (31.8%), calcium (0.085%), phosphorus (0.050%), potassium (0.60%), and vitamin C (0.008%). It also contains essential amino acids, vitamins B1 and B2, and phytochemicals. Notably, it has the highest amounts of alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins compared to other medicinal plants.
Bael is believed to possess various properties, including being an anti-diarrheal agent, antimicrobial, radioprotective, potential anticancer, antipyretic (fever-reducing), anti-ulcer, antigenotoxic (preventing DNA damage), diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and more.
This preparation is a unique combination of Bael (Aegle marmelos) fruit and Connessi (Holarrhena antidysenterica) bark, which is highly effective in various gastrointestinal conditions including diarrhoea, dysentery (both Amoebic & Bacillary dysentery), giardiasis, and helminthiasis. It is also known to relieve drug-induced gastrointestinal troubles. This preparation exerts its effects against various pathogenic microbes, including bacteria like Shigella sp., Escherichia coli, Salmonella sp., parasites like Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and certain worms such as Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale, Taenia solium, etc. Importantly, it is considered safe and well-tolerated for use in both children and adults.
No significant side effects have been observed within the therapeutic dosage range.
Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, elderly individuals, and children should take precautions and consult an Ayurvedic physician before using Bael.
More research is needed to study Bael's interactions with other drugs. Always consult a doctor and avoid self-medication or altering ongoing treatments.
Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light.
